Review Fanny Wang 3001 Noise-Cancelling Headphones – For Fashionistas that take a Lot of Flights

The massive success of Dr Dre Beats headphones has been a revelation. It’s shown that people will happily pay a premium for design when it comes to choosing the best pair of headphones. Now hot on its heels is the Fanny Wang brand, inspired by Dr Dre Beats for its headphones’ looks and genital organs for its name.

If the name doesn’t put you off and you want headphones that can close you off from the world, Fanny Wang’s 3001 Noise- Cancelling heaphones might be worth a look.

Appearance

They say imitation is the highest form of flattery (or the fastest route to patent infraction law suit), which was no doubt on people’s minds when coming up with these headphones. Put simply, these look nearly identical to Dre Beats. But, along with the bold brand name, there are enough aesthetic differences to justify fashionistas giving these a once over as an alternative to Beats by Dre.

As befits their price tag, the Fanny Wang 3001s are robustly built, with high quality hinges unlikely to break while being carried around in a bag. The faux leather ear pads are luxuriously plush, with a generous amount of memory foam helping the Fanny Wang 3001s achieve their noise cancelling credentials. They also have a rubbery matte feel compared to the metal of Dre Beats.

Performance

The Fanny Wang 3001s are fitted with a three way switch in the right headphone for toggling the noise cancelling or to give them a thumping bass boost. The sound cancelling can also be controlled via large easy to press buttons on the cable.

The headphones are fitted with large 50mm drivers and noise cancelling circuitry, which uses four mics to optimise the noise cancellation. Two mics are used to detect outside noise while two optimise what you hear.

For long flights, while sat on the train to work or for lounging around the pool, the noise cancelling technology in the Fanny Wang 3001s will be a revelation. You’ll literally be able to close yourself off from the world around you and to enjoy your favourite music and audiobooks without the normal interference of surrounding noise. Instead, you’ll be able to relax in your own audio world.

In reviews, the sound quality of the Fanny Wang 3001s also gets the nod. Female vocals over guitar with the noise cancelling switched on is expansive and absorbing. While you can switch on the bass boost to enjoy heavier hip hop, rock and dance tracks with as much rumbling bass as you’d expect from Dre Beats.

Summary

All in all, the Fanny Wang 3001s are a luxurious set of headphones. They are perfect for fashion conscious types that take a lot of flights due to the noise cancellation technology or anybody who likes the look of Dre Beats but wants to stand out as an individual.

They are, however, a bit on the bulky side. So for everyday portable sounds you might want to look at the Fanny Wang On-Ear headphones. Designed to compete with Monster Beats Solos, these have the same outer appearance yet the performance is decidedly superior, with a full and rich bass response that doesn’t drown the rest of the range.

Review Ultrasone Edition 8 – High end headphones sturdy enough for the commute to work…but at a price

ultrasone edition 8 headphones

When I first started looking for alternatives to Dr Dre Beats I thought $200 for a pair of headphones was a tidy sum. So you can imagine my jaw hitting the floor when I saw the price tag for these babies. If you’re prepared to shell out over $1500 on a pair of headphones you either take your sounds reaaally seriously or you have more money than sense. One things for sure, wearing these on the commute to work should earn you nods of respect and an immediate upgrade to first class.

So can Ultrasone justify charging the price as a second hand car for a pair of headphones? Or are they having a laugh at their customers all the way to the bank?

Appearance

The Ultrasone Edition 8 (confusingly a successor to the Ultrasone Edition 9) are for people that want the best of everything. Casual listeners need not apply. So they come in a reassuringly elegant wooden box and are made from expensive sounding materials.

Leather from a conventional cow wouldn’t be good enough for this price tag, so instead Ultrasone have sought far and wide before settling on Ethiopian sheepskin for the ear cups. The outer cups are made from Ruthenium (yes, I hadn’t heard of this metal before either) that gives them a metallic sheen and a durability that gives you confidence these will make it to work and back in one piece.

The Ultrasone Edition 8s are, indeed, a beautiful set of cans. They are also sturdy, hardwearing and portable, making them practical for wearing outside the safe confines of your home. But looks aren’t everything (or, at least, they shouldn’t be Dr Dre Beats fans!), and ultimately what matters is how the Ultrasone Edition 8s sound.

Performance

The Ultrasone 8s are closed back headphones. Ordinarily, this means you can listen to your music without it being broadcast to the people around you with the payoff of a loss in transient sound. Not so with these headphones. The Edition 8s are on a par, if not better, than many top open-back headphones, which is incredible for their closed back design.

As you’d expect for the price, the sound does, indeed, dazzle, putting the majority of other high end headphones in the shade. Cymbal crashes will never get boring and the Ultrasone Edition 8s handle kick drums and bass like a concerto grandmaster (do they exist?). Vocal and live recordings, in particular, have never sounded better, with crystal clear imaging and a warm ambience.

You also will notice a significant difference in the sound quality of difference sources. It’s a safe bet that anybody looking to buy these will already have the best home stereo system money can buy. But if you’ve been thinking of upgrading, now might be the time so you can fully enjoy the premium grade audiophile experience the Ultrasone 8s can deliver.

Are they worth the price? Ultimately it comes down to whether $1500 is going to pay your rent and feed you for a month or a mere few days’ salary. There’s certainly a market for these headphones, but if the price tag gives you heart palpitations then you might want to check out the AKG 701s, Grado Prestige or the classic Sennheiser HD650s.

Music that will make you delighted you put down the cash

Blues, classical, live recordings and vocal tracks will sound magnificent, with exceptional imaging, precision and transience for a closed back pair of headphones.

Music that will send you hunting for the receipt

These are not bass monsters, but neither do they aspire to be. So heavy metal and electronica might not set your world alight. If you want bass that can punch through walls then you might want to stick to Beats by Dre or other headphones at a lower price bracket.

Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro Headphones Review – Sounds Before Style

When it comes to making quality professional headphones and electronic equipment Beyerdynamic are up there with the best and they are renowned for producing some of the best headphones around. These days there are several good professional headphones on the market to choose from including recent offerings from top manufacturers Technics, and the relatively new to the market, Beats by Dre, but Beyerdynamic are not fazed as they launch the DT770 Pro headphones for professionals who demand a lightweight and stylish headphone that produce decent sounds.

Appearance

The Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro headphones do not look as though they were designed to be attention grabbing. With its straight laced designs and black and grey color coordination, these headphones are extremely business-like. They certainly don’t offer the same playful colors and designs popularized by the Dre Beats headphones.

The DT770 are built with studio work and a lot of handling in mind so the whole look and feel is of a sturdy nature. It has a thick, well-reinforced cable with a 3.5mm jack at the end. There is also a 1/4-inch adapter which means they can be used in the studio or in an MP3 as you travel around.

Performance

These closed back headphones do a good job of keeping the music directed into your ear and not shared with the annoyed ears of people in the nearby vicinity.

The headphones are designed to sit snuggly around the ears and this provides some excellent noise cancellation. This means that in anywhere but the noisiest of environments you will be able to fully enjoy your music. These headphones can also handle high volume levels and the music will remain crisp and clear as you power up through the volume ranges.

What People Are Saying

The Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro may not look very fun on the outside but inside it can certainly provide endless audio pleasure with the right music. It is a headphone for lovers of bass and those that need something for professional studio work. They are comfortable to wear for extended periods of time and the snug fit around the ear provides good noise cancellation.

Music for which you want to turn the volume up

Bass lovers rejoice and crank up the volume with these headphones. You will be able to enjoy music in genres such as Hip-Hop, R&B and dance, where heavy bass is the order of the day, but you will also love these if you are fan of jazz or rock music.

Music for which they are best left unplugged

Country music, classical and folk are just a few of the genres that the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro may not handle too well. This is because the bass will override much of what makes these types of music enjoyable.

Review Sennheiser HD 25-1 Adidas Originals Premium Headphones – Enjoy your sounds on the street without the background noise

A bit of branding can go a long way. You only have to look at the number of people wearing Dr Dre Beats headphones these days to know that with the right logo on a set of cans people are happy to slap down the cash. Personally, I think too many people have been sucked into buying Monster Beats by Dr Dre based on the branding. So I created this website to address the balance and to review some of the alternatives that are out these.

In this post I’m taking a look at Sennheiser HD 25-1 Adidas Originals Premium Headphones. Are they style over substance? Or is this splicing of Sennheiser and Adidas a beautiful lovechild?

Appearance

The Sennheiser HD 25-1 Adidas Original Premium Headphones are certainly eye catching, with their Adidas logos and sky blue colour. If it’s looks you’re after, then these certainly deliver. They feature a split headband and their lightweight feel also means you can wear them for hours without feeling like you need a neck brace afterwards.

Designed for DJs and for professional sound monitoring, either headphone can be rotated and listened to for whenever you need to do some beat matching on the ‘wheels of steel’ (if anyone still plays on them, that is).

Performance

As mentioned, the Sennheiser HD 25-1 Adidas Originals Premium Headphones are purpose built for DJs and anybody that needs to do professional sound monitoring. Consequently, a lot of attention has been paid to blocking out background noise when you’re listening to them. So whether you’re sat on the bus or walking through a crowded street, these will block out the noise so you can enjoy your tunes in peace.

As you’d expect from Sennheiser headphones with the legendary HD25-1 driver, the Sennheiser HD 25-1 Adidas Original Premium Headphones have excellent sound, with a punchy bass, clear treble and crisp highs. They might not be as bass heavy as Dr Dre’s Beats. But if you want to be able to pick out the cymbals and vocals, rather than be exposed to a wall of rumbling bass noise, then these are worth a look, particularly if you like the retro, DJ culture styling of the Adidas Originals brand.

Review Sennheiser HD 598 Headphones – Rich Luxurious Sounds for Home Use

If you are a fan of the Beats by Dre range of headphones then it is safe to assume that you like your headphones to stand out from the dreary black and grey offerings that so many other manufacturers currently offer on the market. The Dre Beats headphones certainly do stand out from much the pack in terms of looks and sound quality but there are some good alternatives around, and the HD 598 headphones from the legendary headphone maker that is Sennheiser could be one of those. These headphones ooze high-end luxury and screams look at me, but is the beauty also skin-deep?

Appearance

In terms of looks this is certainly a bold offing from Sennheiser. The HD 598 looks very eye-catching with its leather coated headband, high-gloss burl wood finish and dominant beige color coupled with hints of brown. The wide-open soundstage has a luxurious look and feel to it with the thick, tan colored padding for the ear cushions.

The cable for the HD 598 is quite long at 10ft with a ¼ inch plug at the end. Fortunately the cable is detachable which should make storing the headphones a little more convenient. The cable plugs securely into the headphones using a twist and lock feature which ensures that the cable will not be accidentally pulled out of the headphones mid-Britney Spears track.

Performance

Okay so if you are lover of the big bass sounds that are reproduced in the Beats by Dre headphones then these may not be the ideal alternative. The Sennheiser HD 598s strive to reproduce accurate base notes rather than eardrum breaking sounds and this is actually done very well. What you can expect here is deep, smooth and the right amount of guttural bass when needed.

The wide-open soundstage on the Sennheiser HD 598 helps it to reproduce realistic sounds but much of this sound will escape out the back meaning that you will find it difficult to keep your music completely private. In terms of noise cancelation these are not the best headphones around either because they offer no noise cancelation at all; this means that you need to find somewhere very quiet in order to fully appreciate the music coming from the 598s.

What People Say

The Sennheiser HD 598s are a decent pair of headphones. They offer good quality realistic sounds inside a nice luxurious package. However these are not ideal for anything other than using in the home. The lack of noise cancellation and the fact that everyone will be able to hear what you are listening to means that these are more suited to people with a preference for using their headphones indoors. As a pair of indoor headphones though, there are very few others on the market to rival the Sennhesier HD 598s, especially at a price of less than $500.

Music for which you want to turn the volume up

The Sennheiser 598s are great for listening to anything from Michael Buble to Beethoven. It is also ideal for when you are playing video games or watching a movie.

Music for which they are best left unplugged

The HD 598s will not reproduce big bass sounds very well so lovers of things like Hip-Hop, dubstep or dance music are not likely to not find these headphones very satisfying in terms of sound.

Review AKG Q701 Quincy Jones Reference Class Premium Headphones – For Serious Stay at Home Audiophiles

Beats by Dr Dre headphones seem to have opened the floodgates to a wave of celebrities endorsing what all claim to be the best headphones on the market. In this case the AKG Q701 headphones have been endorsed by none other than 27 time GRAMMY award winner Quincy Jones. Having worked on an extensive back catalogue that reads like a roll call of some of the world’s greatest musicians, his endorsement is high praise indeed.

In his own words: “These are the only headphones I’ve heard that bring out the true sound we were striving for on records like “Billie Jean,” “Thriller” and “Give Me the Night”. It’s the best-quality sound I’ve heard, ever.”

So do these deliver the true sound that artists and studio engineers hear? Or is Quincy’s endorsement mere marketing mush? Let’s find out…

Appearance

Anybody hoping for a big, bold ‘Q’ on either headphone can to mimic the branding of Beats by Dr Dre will be sorely disappointed. But these aren’t designed for impressing people on the commute to work. But what you do get is a solid metal pair of cans with a reassuringly luxurious velvet ear pads and a real leather headband that auto adjusts to grip comfortably onto your head.

Available in a range of colours, including bright green, these are an attractive set of headphones. However, their elegant appearance is likely to be just for you and your nearest and dearest’s enjoyment because these are unlikely to leave the home. That is unless you’re happy to lug around the extra amplification equipment that needs to go with them…

Performance

The AKG Q701 Quincy Jones headphones feature revolutionary flat wire voice coil technology and patented two-layer diaphragm. To the uninitiated, this is the same audio technology you’d find in a high end speaker system or microphone compressed into a set of headphones. In practical terms, this means you can expect extremely accurate sound reproduction that will simply blow you away.

Quincy Jones knows good music and, judging from the performance of these, he knows a good pair of headphones. As befitting the price tag, the AKG Q701s offer a spacious soundstage, which gives pin point clarity, depth and a sweet bass that blends into the midrange beautifully.

If you want to hear music as the artist intended then the AKG Q701 Quincy Jones headphones are a high end option that can offer you some of the most enjoyable listening experiences money can buy.

What people say

Reviewers are universally agreed that the sound quality of the AKG Q701 Quincy Jones headphones is simply superb. They cover a phenomenal frequency range and give you a real sense of ‘space’. As with everything in life, quality comes with a price tag, but if you love to hear music with clarity and depth then these are money well spent.

However, it’s important to note that you may not get the optimum experience listening to these straight through the audio port of your iPad or laptop. These need extra amplification to drive the sound. One solution is to buy a USB audio amplifier (e.g. TonePort or FiiO E17) to give the sound that extra kick through the audio cable. You may also want to ‘burn’ these in for two weeks to get the true audiophile experience that AKG and Quincy intended.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that these headphones are open backed, and consequently leak sound and wont mask background noise. So not ideal for the commute to work, but then that’s not what these headphones are for. They’re for becoming immersed in music at home where you can take pleasure in every note and stanza, just as the artist intended.

Music to turn up

Classical, pop or rock will sound like you’re discovering music for the first time.

Music to turn down

Heart palpitating bass was not on the design sheet for these. For deep growling bass for hip-hop, drum & bass, dubstep and beats on the streets you might want to look elsewhere.

Review Sennheiser HD650 Reference Headphones – Is Sennheiser’s Prize Gem still Gleaming?

Sennheiser has been developing some of the best headphones available for over 60 years. The German brand has a legacy for audio engineering excellence that makes certain other celebrity endorsed headphones brands seem life adolescents in comparison. The crown jewel of the Sennheiser range are the HD650s reference headphones.

Appearance

The Sennheiser HD650 headphones might not have the ‘cool’ lines and aesthetics of Beats by Dr Dre headphones. The outer grills on the headphones might not be to be to everyone’s tastes and they’re certainly heavy.

But on the other hand, these aren’t designed for the commute to work. These are audiophile headphones for enjoying music as artists intended it to be heard in the peaceful surroundings of home.

They are certainly comfortable to wear, with a solid plastic and metallic construction and padded headband that grips your head without feeling as thought it’s in a vice. The cushioned ear pads are also shaped to cup the ear rather than be placed on top of it, enabling you to wear these for hours comfortably.

Performance

Many people buy Sennheiser headphones based on the brand name alone, taking confidence in the reputation that a 60 year history and the HD650s have earned it. These headphones feature lightweight aluminium voice coils and high power neodymium magnets, but I’m sure what you really want to know is how they sound.

If these are your first hi-end headphones then you will be amazed at how you hear things in music you never knew were there. The mids are clear and well presented, while the treble is tight, precise and clear as crystal. You will undoubtably notice a leap in depth and detail when listening to even the best mid-range headphones. In particular, the Sennheiser HD650 headphones score top marks for their range of powerful and highly textured bass, which doesn’t intrude on other frequencies while making its presence known (which has been a complaint of Dr Dre Beats’ bass heavy headphones).

What people say

As with any high end headphones, to get the best headphones performance you will need to burn these in first by leaving them plugged into the radio. You will also need the right setup to get the most out of these headphones. Plugging the Sennheiser HD650 headphones simply wont do. If you don’t have a high quality amplifier then the best alternative is buy a USB audio amplifier (e.g. TonePort or FiiO E17) to drive the sound.

The Sennheiser HD650 headphones offer amazing treble and mid range sounds, but where they really score highly with reviewers is the awesome bass and accurate soundstage that surpasses most headphones in the high end market.

On the downside, being open backed these leak sound like a sieve. So it’s not advisable to take these on the train or bus, unless you want to get looks for all the wrong reasons. But that’s not what they’re for. The Sennheiser HD650 headphones are for enjoying music as though you are there in the studio, to be savoured and submerged in without background noise to disturb you.

Music you’ll turn up

These are simply perfect for classic rock thanks to their magical bass, which will provide a lush texture to string and woodwind instruments. These are also among the best headphones for dub, reggae, classical and progressive rock.

Music you’ll switch off

The Sennheiser HD650 headphones may struggle to keep up the pace with fast rock or high tempo dance tracks. While their bass performance is exceptional, it might not be heavy enough for those looking for something to rattle their eyeballs.

Review Bose Quiet Comfort 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones – The Frequent Flyer’s Friend

Bose Quiet Comfort 15

The corkscrew. The sparkplug. The light bulb. All are designed to perform a specific task, which they all do diligently without any need for fanfare. This is much like the Bose Quiet Comfort 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones. To coin a cliché, they ‘do exactly what it says on the tin’. In this case it’s enabling the wearer to enjoy their music or to sit in silence without being disturbed by the ambient noise around them.

The Bose Quiet Comfort 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones are beloved by frequent flyers and commuters for their ability to block out the rumble of the aircraft engines or train. But they are not without their critics, particularly among ardent audiophiles.

Appearance

Considering their high-end price bracket, you might be disappointed with the build quality of these noise cancelling headphones. Rather than a luxurious, exotic choice of metals, the Bose Quiet Comfort 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones are made from plastic. But whilst they might not impress fellow commuters in the looks department, what the use of plastic does mean is that they are lightweight and comfortable to wear for long periods compared to metal heavyweight cans that can feel like wearing a vice after a while.

Supporting the focus on comfort rather than looks are the large earcups, which fit snugly over the ears. And being closed back means they will passively reduce background noise without the need to switch on the gadgetry hidden inside. The added bonus of the large earcups is that they don’t leak sound, which means you don’t have to worry about disturbing your neighbour when banging out Beethoven or the avalanche of explosions when watching The Avengers.

Additional features include the ability to answer phone calls on an iPhone with the inline mic, a reassuringly solid case and the ability to twist the earcups 90 degrees for neatly folding them away after your journey.

Performance

The noise cancelling abilities of the Bose Quiet Comfort headphones comes from battery powered technology packed into the cans. Mics are fitted to the inside and outside to pickup outside ambient noise and then to cancel it out using Bose’s patented Triport® acoustic technology for a tonally balanced sound performance.

Sounds impressive. So how does it perform?

The reviews I read are universally praising of the sound cancelling performance of the Bose Quiet Comfort headphones. Whether on flights, on trains or to block out the ambient noise at work, these headphones are the best in class at what they do. What’s more you don’t get the ‘whoosh’ that you get with most electronically powered noise cancelling headphones. Instead, the rumbling sound of an airplane engine is replaced with a mild mid-level hiss, enabling you to enjoy music and movies in peace.

So if you’re looking for comfortable, noise cancelling headphones for travel then look no further. But (and it’s a big but) if you’re looking for audiophile class sound performance you might want to look elsewhere.

The Bose Quiet Comfort headphones have been described as sounding ‘airless’ in the highs and slightly thin in the middles. The bass is likeable but can lack impact and weight when listening to drums or electric bass. So if sound performance is top of the agenda, you might want to look at what the Grado SR325is or Sennheiser HD650s have to offer in this price bracket. The payoff is that you’re then looking at losing the noise cancelling abilities of the Bose Quiet Comfort headphones. So it’s a case of horses for courses, as the saying goes.

When you’ll leave them on

The Bose Quiet Comfort Headphones are the perfect headphones for flights, commuting and for blocking out background noise at work. Their noise cancelling technology enables you to watch movies and listen to music in peace without being disturbed by the cacophony of people talking or rumbling engines. They’re also great for listening to classical, jazz and other music that lives in the midrange.

When they’ll be left in their carry case

These headphones won’t work without a battery. So it’s wise to carry a spare around. While great at cancelling background noise, they lack the sound performance of Sennheiser or Grado in this price bracket and will struggle with hip-hop, hard rock and other bass heavy music. However, Bose Quiet Comfort 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones are designed for listening to music quietly in a noisey environment, not the other way around.

Beyerdynamic T1 600 Ohm headphones review – Break the Tesla barrier with these high end headphones that ooze class in build quality and transparent sound

Beyerdynamic T1 600

Ever broken the Tesla barrier? No, this isn’t a Star Trek reference or the latest discovery in the hadron collider, but the audio power that Beyerdynamics has packed into its flagship pair of headphones. The Beyerdynamic T1 600 Ohm headphones feature Neodymium magnets positioned into a ring around the coil that provides a double magnetic flux density to 1.2 Tesla. In other words, they have the power to produce an exceptionally clean, crisp and transparent sound with low distortion.

Sounds impressive. So have Beyerdynamic’s qualified craftsmen in Heilbronn, Germany, produced a masterpiece of high end headphones craftsmanship? Or is the techie talk of more interest to physicists than audiophiles?

Appearance

As you’d expect of headphones born from German engineering, the Beyerdynamic T1 600 Ohm headphones are a beautiful piece of craftsmanship. Everything about them screams high end, from the velour ear pads and leather headband to the classy mesh grilles on the satin aluminium ear cups. The overall presentation when you receive them is equally impressive, with them delivered in a luxuriant sculpted foam aluminium flight case.

The Beyerdynamic T1 600 Ohm headphones are indeed a handsome pair of cans, with a sleek, modern and minimalist look that belies their raw power.

Performance

The Beyerdynamic T1 600 Ohm headphones are rated among the best dynamic headphones around.

Their detail retrieval is exceptional, with a transparent midrange that makes guitars and vocals sound crisp and clear. The treble is smooth without stridence or harshness, while the rolled off bass sounds natural while still having body and impact to give music a reassuringly sold thump.

Where these headphones (and the effect of the 1.2 Tesla coil technology) stand out is in their reproduction of detail. The soundstage is big and airy, providing great reproductions of spatial nuances and the separation of instruments. The imaging is incredible, with them able to place musicians on stage exceptionally well. If you’re looking for natural tonality, with silky highs and superb detail, then the Beyerdynamic T1 600 Ohm headphones are hard to beat.

It’s worth noting that, as with any high end headphones, to get the best performance you’ll need to burn these in for a while. It’s also recommended to use a powerful desktop headphones amp, such as the Woo Audio WA2 or the Beyerdynamic A1 Sterep Headphone Amplifier, to enjoy their audiophile grade delights.

Music to turn up

Classical, rock, vocal tracks and even electronic music where you want to pick out individual sounds in depth and fine precision like you’ve never heard them before. Footsteps, raindrops and whispering can all be heard where before there was only a background hiss.

Music to switch cans

These are not bass monsters. Nor do they aspire to be. These headphones are for listening to music in fine detail from home. So if you’re looking for headphones for bass heavy hip hop or heavy metal then you might want to look elsewhere.

Best Bluetooth Headsets in 2013 for Crystal Clear Calls, Superb Sound Reduction and HD Audio Performance

best bluetooth headset

Bluetooth headsets have improved dramatically in recent years. No longer do you have to worry about calls cutting out, the wind stopping people from hearing what you have to say or tinny sound. Today’s best Bluetooth headsets provide the same level of noise reduction, call quality and audio performance you’d expect from a full sized pair of Bluetooth cans.

However, the saying ‘you get what you pay for’ is particularly apt when assessing the Bluetooth headset market. There are plenty of cheap headsets to choose from, but can mean having to put up with crackling background noise, distorted conversations and earpiece pain because of the cheaper components. Instead, I recommend at looking at the higher end, where manufacturers have pulled out all the stops to create the best Bluetooth headsets possible.

Here’s a rundown of the best Bluetooth headsets in 2013:

Plantronics Voyager Bluetooth headset

Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth headset

The flagship of their range, the Plantronics Voyager Bluetooth headset provides stellar sound quality and a range of innovative features. This includes enhanced WindSmart technology, which uses precision tuned triple microphones to provide not one but three layers of protection against interference from wind noise when making calls.

The Plantronics Voyager also features Smart Sensor technology, which switches them on automatically when you put them on. This means you just clip it to your ear and your ready to take calls without fiddling to find the on button.

This Bluetooth headset also comes with an attractive docking station for recharging when not in use, along with a USB charger for wall charging. While slightly larger than other Bluetooth headsets, the Plantronic Voyager is regarded as one of the best performing Bluetooth headsets around.

Jawbone ICON HD bluetooth headset

Jawbone ICON HD Bluetooth headset

Exceptionally stylish and smart looking, the Jawbone ICON HD is part Bluetooth headset and part dedicated apps processor.

Its innovative technological features include the Noise Assassin 3.0, offering military grade noise reduction using the same technology used in the headsets of tank commanders and helicopter pilots. The Jawbone ICON HD Bluetooth headset will also automatically adjust the inbound call volume in response to the level of background noise, for clearer calls without having to keep manually adjusting the volume. Another unique feature is its MotionX technology, which enables you to ‘ShakeShake’ the headset into pairing mode or ‘TapTap’ to answer calls button free.

But perhaps the main talking point for the Jawbone ICON HD Bluetooth headset is that it integrates with the MyTALK platform. This enables you to upgrade its hardware to harness the latest Bluetooth technology and to gain the functionality of new apps, such as installing a pedometer to track distance when running or to send texts and emails with voice commands.

Smart, modern and stylish, the Jawbone ICON HD is packed with technological features that make it well deserving of its place on this list of the best Bluetooth headsets in 2013.

Sennheiser EZX-60 bluetooth headset

Sennheiser EZX-60 Bluetooth headset

Sennheiser is a name renowned for producing some of the most revered headphones in the market, beloved by casual listeners and audiophiles alike. Its entry into Bluetooth headsets features the superb quality audio and noise cancellation you’d expect of the German brand.

Elegant yet robust, the steel encased Sennheiser VMX 200-11 Bluetooth headset weighs just 10g and features Sennheiser’s VoiceMax technology, which utilises two microphones to remove external noise and provide HD quality sound transmission for calls in even the noisiest environment. Perhaps where this Bluetooth headset really shines is its 10 hour battery life, dwarfing the mere 3 hours you can expect from a Jawbone headset.

Superb sound quality, hardwearing and excellent noise cancellation makes the Sennheiser VMX 200-11 Bluetooth headset a compelling choice as the best Bluetooth headset for serious business users.

Bose Bluetooth Series 2

Bose Bluetooth Series 2

Bose is the dominant player in the noise cancelling headphones market. Its QuietComfort 3s are regarded as the leading type of noise cancelling headphones around, and are a common site on the heads of frequent flyers. So it’s natural that the company founded by Dr Amar Bose in 1964 would want to adapt its technology for the Bluetooth headset market.

The Bose Bluetooth Series 2s feature its patented Triport acoustic structure technology that reduces background noise while enhancing that of your voice. What’s more, this technology automatically adjusts the audio in response to ambient noise levels, which means you don’t have to keep adjusting the volume manually. This can, however, still be adjusted utilising a pinch button mechanism mounted on either side of the Bluetooth headset.

Plantronics BackBeat Go Bluetooth earphones

Plantronics BackBeat GO

All the headsets featured in this overview of the best Bluetooth headsets are all mono. So while small and compact, they don’t offer a full stereo listening experience. If a stereo Bluetooth headset is what you’re after then you may want to check out the Plantronics Backbeat GO.

These can be connected wirelessly with a smartphone or tablet to provide a stereo listening experience. This makes them an ideal headset for runners and athletes that don’t want to get tangled up in wires while on the treadmill or working out. Inline controls housed in the cable enable you to take calls, skip tracks and adjust the volume without having to retrieve your smartphone from your pocket.

Comfy, lightweight and highly portable, the Plantronics BackBeat Go is regarded as one of the best wireless Bluetooth earphones you can buy.
