If you are a fan of the Beats by Dre range of headphones then it is safe to assume that you like your headphones to stand out from the dreary black and grey offerings that so many other manufacturers currently offer on the market. The Dre Beats headphones certainly do stand out from much the pack in terms of looks and sound quality but there are some good alternatives around, and the HD 598 headphones from the legendary headphone maker that is Sennheiser could be one of those. These headphones ooze high-end luxury and screams look at me, but is the beauty also skin-deep?

Appearance

In terms of looks this is certainly a bold offing from Sennheiser. The HD 598 looks very eye-catching with its leather coated headband, high-gloss burl wood finish and dominant beige color coupled with hints of brown. The wide-open soundstage has a luxurious look and feel to it with the thick, tan colored padding for the ear cushions.

The cable for the HD 598 is quite long at 10ft with a ¼ inch plug at the end. Fortunately the cable is detachable which should make storing the headphones a little more convenient. The cable plugs securely into the headphones using a twist and lock feature which ensures that the cable will not be accidentally pulled out of the headphones mid-Britney Spears track.

Performance

Okay so if you are lover of the big bass sounds that are reproduced in the Beats by Dre headphones then these may not be the ideal alternative. The Sennheiser HD 598s strive to reproduce accurate base notes rather than eardrum breaking sounds and this is actually done very well. What you can expect here is deep, smooth and the right amount of guttural bass when needed.

The wide-open soundstage on the Sennheiser HD 598 helps it to reproduce realistic sounds but much of this sound will escape out the back meaning that you will find it difficult to keep your music completely private. In terms of noise cancelation these are not the best headphones around either because they offer no noise cancelation at all; this means that you need to find somewhere very quiet in order to fully appreciate the music coming from the 598s.

What People Say

The Sennheiser HD 598s are a decent pair of headphones. They offer good quality realistic sounds inside a nice luxurious package. However these are not ideal for anything other than using in the home. The lack of noise cancellation and the fact that everyone will be able to hear what you are listening to means that these are more suited to people with a preference for using their headphones indoors. As a pair of indoor headphones though, there are very few others on the market to rival the Sennhesier HD 598s, especially at a price of less than $500.

Music for which you want to turn the volume up

The Sennheiser 598s are great for listening to anything from Michael Buble to Beethoven. It is also ideal for when you are playing video games or watching a movie.

Music for which they are best left unplugged

Appearance

The Sennheiser HD650 headphones might not have the ‘cool’ lines and aesthetics of Beats by Dr Dre headphones. The outer grills on the headphones might not be to be to everyone’s tastes and they’re certainly heavy.

In particular, the Sennheiser HD650 headphones score top marks for their range of powerful and highly textured bass, which doesn’t intrude on other frequencies while making its presence known (which has been a complaint of Dr Dre Beats’ bass heavy headphones).

What people say

As with any high end headphones, to get the best headphones performance you will need to burn these in first by leaving them plugged into the radio. You will also need the right setup to get the most out of these headphones. Plugging the Sennheiser HD650 headphones simply wont do. If you don’t have a high quality amplifier then the best alternative is buy a USB audio amplifier (e.g. TonePort or FiiO E17) to drive the sound.

And its in terms of its number of technology features where these headphones really shine:

Touch sensitive control – Swipe the right ear cup vertically to adjust the volume, horizontally to skip tracks. This functionality gets nods of approval from many reviewers for being responsive and one of these headphones’ outstanding features.

DSP (Digital Sound Processor) – this powerful drivers reconstruct the sound to create the ‘Parrot Concert Hall’ effect that’s designed to give the impression that music comes from in front of you.

Active Noise Control System – its claimed that these headphones can eliminate up to 98 percent of ambient sound. This is achieved through four microphones, instead of two, which analyse ambient noise and then cancel it out with opposing sound waves.

Double microphone –  the  Parrot Philippe Starck Zik are designed to be used in conjunction with a smartphone and enable calls to be taken with a standard microphone and a bone conduction sensor that detects and analyses the vibrations of the jaw to work out what you are saying.

Parrot smartphone app – The app for these headphones enables you to play around with the equalizer, the room type and the speaker angle to fine tune the audio performance to suit the music you’re listening to.

These features will delight gadget fans and commuters who like to block out the world around them. But what about the audiophiles out there?

Performance

The Parrot Philippe Starck Zik wireless headphones certainly pack in a lot of features, and their noise cancelling technology makes worthy of serious consideration by commuters and those that take a lot of flights. However, there’s often a payoff with noise cancelling technology in terms of the authenticity of the sound. These headphones have excellent performance that will delight anybody stepping up from a sub $100 pair of cans. The sound is responsive, crisp and bassy without sounding distorted. But existing owners of high end headphones, such as those by Sennheiser or Grado, might find the sound lacks the pure audio experience.

Active noise cancelling requires a lot of sound processing, which in turn leads to a not altogether natural sound. Adjusting the Concert Hall settings can also have a big effect on the sound performance. So you can do a lot to improve the sound through playing around with the Parrot app’s settings.

In conclusion, the Parrot Philippe Starck Zik headphones offer smart design, a wealth of features and great noise cancellation, making them a great choice for gadget fans and commuters. But the pay off in authentic sound quality from all the techie features may put off audiophiles looking for headphones that deliver as close to an authentic sound as is possible.

Mids are cleaner and bass is tighter and has an excellent response. The lower mid range is a little bit recessed which tends to make voices sound like they are a bit further away and the upper mid range to lower treble is over emphasized. But the voices are clear and smooth. In fact, a lot of reviewers say that these are audibly better than Beats by Dre.

When it comes to its sound quality, you can easily compare how good the SoundMagic E10s sound compare to Apple’s free earbuds. The soundstage is present and excellent, highs are crisp and clear. The bass is well blended and goes deeper the more you listen to it. One of Magic E10 key features is noise Isolation, which makes it more enjoyable to use when you are at the subway or any public places where there are a lot of unnecessary external noise.

At a price of $ 31.99, I think these pair of ear buds are a bargain and definitely one of the best iPhone headphones. They may not look as striking as the SteelSeroundMagic E10, but you will be amazed how comfortable they feel. The SteelSeries Flux in Ear Pros are great for playing long sessions Candycrush or Clash of Clans as they fit snuggly and won’t fall out easily. Better yet, they also do a great job of isolating outside noise.

Build quality mostly exceeds that of other headsets in this top 5 list of best iPhone headphones. The cable is long so you can put your iPhones in a bag or your short’s pocket, with the flexible cable much stronger than your average earphone wire, which often break in a matter of months.

The soundstage is wide, perhaps much wider than your average headphones.
